How to Plan your Career?

If you were to ask me how to choose a Career, I would typically advise you to go through a Self assessment. This first step in the career planning process would allow you to look at your Personality, Interests, Skills and Work-related values and, based on that information, come up with a list of potential careers. From there, I would have you explore the occupations on your list, using the Internet and perhaps some print resources, in order to narrow your list down to a shorter list of about five to 10 occupations. More in-depth exploration of the remaining careers, through informational interviews for example, would allow you to hone in on one occupation to pursue. Is this the only way to choose a career?

Know your Personality?

Are you trying to decide what career to pursue? Then you should find out what your personality type is. Certain occupations are more suitable for particular personality types than others are. However, personality type should not be the only factor you consider when choosing a career. A self assessment should also look at your values, interests and abilities, in addition to your personality type. These four factors taken together serve as a better indicator of career success than any one does alone.

What is Self assessment?

Self assessment is the process of gathering information about you in order to make an informed career decision. It is the first step of the Career Planning Process.  Ask yourself the following questions to choose your career.

  • What is your Aim?
  • What do you want to be in your life?
  • Which subject you like most?
  • Which subject you feel difficult?
  • What are the family conditions of your Parents, Financially?
  • Job opportunities in that course?

How to Choose your Career?

There are hundreds of career options out there. How do you make a career choice when you don't really know what you want to do? Does it seem like an insurmountable task? It's not. Yes, you will have to put some time and energy into making your decision, but your effort will be well worth it in the end. Follow these steps to making a good career choice.

Before you can make a career choice you have to learn about yourself. Your values, interests, and skills, in combination with certain personality traits, will make some careers especially suitable for you and some particularly inappropriate. You can use self assessment tools, often called career tests, to gather this information and, subsequently, to generate a list of occupations that are deemed appropriate.
